Today, we will discuss a concern that many patients ask me about: under-eye bags.

Under-eye bags can significantly affect our appearance. They may make us look worn out, tired, or sad, and can also make us appear older than our actual age.

How Can We Address Under-Eye Bags?
You may be wondering how under-eye bags can be treated or removed. Before discussing treatment, we first need to understand how they develop. In this discussion, there are two main causes to consider.
Cause 1: Weakening of the Orbital Septum with Fat Herniation
This occurs when the tissue that holds the under-eye fat in place becomes lax. Aging is a common contributing factor. Ongoing stress, insufficient rest, an overly demanding lifestyle, and staying up late may also contribute to a tired-looking under-eye area. When the supporting tissue becomes lax, the existing fat can bulge forward even without an increase in its volume, making the bags more noticeable, particularly during periods of stress or lack of sleep.

Cause 2: Reduced Bony Support Beneath the Eyes (Flat or Negative-Vector Midface)
Another cause may involve the surrounding facial structure rather than the under-eye fat itself, particularly the area beneath the eye sockets. For example, the bone at the front of the cheeks may be recessed. Some people have a naturally flat or recessed midface from birth, while others may develop changes in this area following an injury or surgery. As the surrounding support becomes less prominent, the existing under-eye bags can appear more noticeable even if their size has not changed.

There are therefore several approaches to treating under-eye bags. If you would like to learn more about the available treatment options, please see the additional information below.
